【OUTDOOR PRODUCTS / アウトドアプロダクツ】
1973年、米国ロサンゼルスのアルトシュール兄弟によって始められたブランド、「アウトドアプロダクツ」。
兄弟のショップは当初、軍物のサープラスやキャンプ用品を扱い、軍物のタープをキャンプ用のテントやリュックなどにリメイクする設備も備えた、西海岸で初めての百貨店でした。
ある時彼らはふと気が付きました。スキーやカヌー、登山など実際のシーンで有用な道具はたくさん取り揃えているものの、そういったアクティビティに関わる人たちが「普段使い」できる商品が全く無いことを。
本物のギアを知っている人たちに「普段使い」として自信を持って勧められる商品が、その当時の市場には存在していなかったのです。

そこで、軍用のタープをリメイクする設備を使い、彼らが作り始めたのが「アウトドアプロダクツ」のバッグでした。
そういった成り立ちで始まったがゆえに、最初のショップの品揃えはリュック·寝袋·ゲイター·レインポンチョなどが何の脈絡もなく並んでいる奇妙なものでした。
彼らは、ギアとしては最高の商品を長年リスペクトをもって扱い続けてきたので、そういった商品と争うような商品の開発には手を付けずに、それらのブランドが手を付けていない「普段使い」の商品に着目したのです。

やがて「アウトドアプロダクツ」の生産量は増え、従業員の数も増えていきますが、1970年代半ばの労働組合運動の高まりによって、1人当たりの工賃は上がり続けるばかりでした。
唯一の解決策は、製品一個当たりの工程を簡略化することであり、そして生み出されたデザインが、現在にも至る「アウトドアプロダクツ」のシンプルなデイパックの基本的なスタイルとなったのです。
基本的に2枚のパーツと最低限の縫製量でシンプルに作られながらも、耐久性に優れたコーデュラの生地とYKKのジップを使用したデイパックは、同じくシンプルな作りのボストンバッグと共に、1980年代半ばには全米の大学の生協で販売されるまでになりました。

余分なものをすべてそぎ落としたデザインはどんなファッションにもどんな年齢にもすんなりとマッチし、やがて多くのアメリカ人に愛用されるようになりました。
そして今や「アウトドアプロダクツ」のバッグは世界の60カ国以上で人気を得て愛用されています。
「アウトドアプロダクツ」のデイパックの誕生にはアメリカの高度成長期の事情が大きな影響を及ぼしていたのです。
