Shoot photos under strong light sources such as the sun will show the familiar "flare" spot on the image. Flares can significantly reduce image quality. Different lenses produce different glare patterns. The shape of a large spot depends on the shape of the aperture of the lens and the color is dependent on the glass and coating used.
Lens hood prevents light from entering the lens at extreme angles or reflecting within the lens. This reduces the contrast of the image. The hood has two other very practical purposes. Protect your lens when you are standing on the ground or in your camera bag, and prevent your fingers from touching the front of the lens.
