スーパーファミコンから始まった人気RPGシリーズの3作目で、プレイステーションで発売された『スターオーシャン セカンドストーリー』の続編として、2年後の世界が舞台となっている。十賢者たちとの壮絶な戦闘ののち、地球の大学へ通っていたプリシスが、かつての仲間、オペラから発せられたエマージェンシー·コールを受信するところから物語は始まる。とある惑星で墜落事故を起こした仲間を救い出すため、おなじみのキャラクターが集結し、冒険へと旅立つ。
対応機種がゲームボーイになってはいるものの、従来のシリーズ作品で好評だったシステムは健在。たとえば、戦闘で得たスキルポイントを使ってキャラクターを自分好みに育てることができる「キャラクターメイキング」。各キャラクターには、スキルというパラメータが用意され、このレベルを上げていくことにより、多種多様な特技を身に付けることができる。伸ばすスキルと身につけさせる特技によって、プレイヤーごとに、まったく違うキャラクターに育てられるのが特徴。戦闘も含めたキャラクターの育成が楽しい作品だ。（柏木ゆう）
