Easy to playCatch the Chicken is really easy to play. Kids will be able to pick up the rules quickly. Its gameplay has been designed deliberately simple to allow kids to focus more on learning the language itself. Often if a game is technical or overly complicated, the kids minds tend to focus too heavily on understanding gameplay and takes away from the language learning experience. So Catch the Chicken balances this by keeping the game fun enough to retain the kids interest, and easy enough to allow them to focus on learning the language. All in all, it provides fun gameplay that isnt distracting. As they say, less is more. |
Physical Game"A healthy body is a healthy mind," as the Roman poet Juvenal once said. Catch the Chicken is not only an educational game, its also a physical game where kids need to burn energy. Gameplay allows for running, tagging and chasing. Most ESL card games have one disadvantage, and that is they dont take into account that kids are generally rambunctious, full of energy and enjoy using their bodies. Its often a bad idea for kids to sit down for long stretches of time while they learn, as they can become easily agitated, distracted and restless. Catch the Chicken takes this into account and kills two birds with one stone. We give kids a chance to let off steam, while also focusing on learning English. However, if kids need quiet time, its no problem at all, as Catch the Chicken is highly flexible and provides variation in gameplay that allows for less physical, relaxed rules. |
Original drawings and designsCopying and pasting pictures from the internet? Purchasing cheap stock vector images? Heck no, thats not our style. Every design, picture and character for this ESL game has been custom designed by English teachers in Japan with young English learners in mind. Weve specifically fashioned the cards to be as fun and colorful as possible to maintain childrens focus and interest. Furthermore, children will have a good chuckle along the way, as the cards have a few funny and fun answer choices. |

Flexible GameplayThere are a variety of ways to play Catch the Chicken and several bonus games within each pack. While gameplay is aimed at being physical, there are also games suggested which allow for more quiet, chilled-out games. For example, one of bonus games provided in each pack is the well-known game of rock paper scissors, which if played sitting down, does not require any physicality. Further game information is supplied in each pack within the instruction booklet. |
English TeachersThis game is a great tool for English teachers. You can follow the curriculum provided step by step, or simply use each game separately as a one-off warm-up or warm-down game. It can also be a way to turn an otherwise quiet, dead class into a more active, energetic class. |
ParentsLooking at teaching your kids English earlier than usual? Or thinking of giving your students an edge over other learners? Catch the Chicken is a great option for parents to get their children interested in English. It can also be a great way for parents and children to learn English together! In particular, parents who are too busy to take English lessons themselves. |
Over 48 Question and Answer cardsThere are 48 Question and Answer cards in Q&A Medium Level. Each question and answer has been carefully selected to align with the grading of most Japanese educational institutions. Each of these questions and answer cards, can also be used as a drill tool. For example, if your goal for the day is to only learn a single set phrase such as, "please pass the soy sauce," you can have each student who selects a Q&A card to simply say, "please pass the soy sauce," and continue to do so for the entire lesson. Repetition is the mother of all learning, so feel free to use these cards, not only as intended, but for your own drill tool. In other words, modify the game however you like. |
As the saying goes, "It is better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward."
Throwing kids into the deep end and expecting them to understand English right away is one of the biggest mistakes an educator can make. It not only shatters a childs confidence, but it causes them to lose interest in English completely. THIS IS NOT GOOD! This is why scaffolding is so important, and why Catch the Chicken has an edge over other card games, as we have strived to provide foolproof scaffolding in our curriculum. In short, scaffolding is when multiple lessons are broken up into chunks to make the ultimate goal easier to achieve. By doing so, it should make learning English much easier for kids and conducting lessons a lot smoother for teachers.
Catch the Chicken syllabus outline:
To sum up, we use scaffolding to combine the packs of Catch the Chicken to make things easier on students. We progressively move children to a greater understanding of English and we use small steps to do so.

CARD RULESQ&A Cards The player who draws one of these cards must read the cards question aloud. The next player up answers the question. These cards should remain face up after being drawn and set aside from the face down cards. Students can use the cards hint words to complete the cards questions and answers. Tip: Encourage students to create their own hint words. Catch the Chicken Cards If the red card is drawn, the Chickens must immediately run to the ‘safe zone’ in order to avoid being tagged (Caught) by the Catcher. Moreover, if a chicken is tagged before reaching the safe zone, they become a Catcher. Once all of the non-tagged chickens reach the safe zone, the next round can begin. Before the next round begins, this card is turned face down once again and returned to the face down pile in order to be drawn again. Catch the Catcher Cards For this green card, repeat the same process as the red card, except Chickens are chasing the Catchers. |
