Ayanami became the 11th ship of the snowblizzard-type (special type) in April 1930.
This model has been strengthened to 1,300t standard drainage capacity of the pre-class Mutsuki model to 1,680t. The torpedo launcher has been strengthened from 6 to 9 gates, and the main gun has been reinforced from 4 12 cm single cannons to 6 5 inch (12.7 cm) round guns.
It was far more powerful than the U.S. British destroyer built at the same time.
In addition, Ayanami raises the elevation of the main gun and allows for airborne guns, and the larger size of the klebridge, so it is also called the Special Type II.
