Flanged ball bearings are not really different types of bearings. They can also be flanged or planed as they are provided to seal or open ball bearings. Flanges are another option just given to the design engineer by the bearing manufacturer. Flanges are designed to assist with bearing attachment and positioning in delicate or problem applications and extend or lip to the outer wheel of the bearing.
